Why I Chose an Apprenticeship in Construction: My Journey as a Sparky

Hi, I’m Josh Jones, and I’m currently a Level 3 Installation/Maintenance Electrician apprentice. I often get asked why I chose this path, so I thought I’d share my experience and hopefully inspire others considering a career in construction.

Why Construction?

For me, the idea of going straight into a job after school was much more appealing than sixth form. I wanted to learn a trade and build a solid foundation for my future. I’ve always been interested in how things work, and electrics particularly caught my attention. An apprenticeship seemed like the perfect way to combine my interests with practical, hands-on experience.

The Perks of Being an Apprentice

The best thing about being an apprentice is the constant learning. You’re surrounded by experienced professionals who are always willing to share their knowledge. It’s a very hands-on environment, which is exactly what I was looking for. And the best part? You’re getting paid to learn a valuable trade! You’re constantly progressing and building your skills while earning.

Overcoming Challenges

Like any learning experience, there are challenges. For me, the theory side of college was the toughest hurdle. But with a bit of extra revision at home, I’ve been able to overcome it. It just takes dedication and consistent effort.

Advice for School Leavers

If you’re a school leaver who prefers hands-on work to classrooms and offices, I wholeheartedly recommend an apprenticeship. You get incredible opportunities to work on diverse projects, often travelling to different building sites across the country. This exposes you to a wide range of experiences and keeps things interesting. My parents are also very supportive of my decision to pursue a trade, as they see it as a secure and reliable career path.

What Schools Can Do

I think schools could do more to promote construction careers. Simply presenting the opportunities available would be a great start. Perhaps workshops could be organised to give students a better understanding of the different trades within the industry.

Local Opportunities and My Peers

There are quite a few colleges within an hour of where I live offering various construction courses. However, finding an apprenticeship can sometimes be a challenge. Most of my friends have either gone on to sixth form with the aim of going to university, or into other employment, with only a couple pursuing careers in construction.

Achievements and Future Goals

One of the things I’m most proud of is having worked on different building projects across the country – something I never imagined I’d be doing at this age. Looking ahead, my immediate goal is to become fully qualified. In the next five years, I plan to gain my testing and inspection qualifications. And in ten years’ time, I hope to be a fully established and experienced electrician.

Choosing an apprenticeship has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. It’s a fantastic way to gain valuable skills, earn while you learn, and build a successful career in a rewarding industry. If you’re considering a hands-on career, I encourage you to explore the world of apprenticeships in construction – you might just surprise yourself.
